It is an "earn while you learn" device. There are no cooking instructions which come with. We use it for steamed corn, potatoes, rice, etc. - these work very well with practice.

This steamer is really a good use of the money. Totally worth it. Holds a lot of food, cooks it quickly without letting too much steam escape and without heating up the house. It's fairly easy to clean (a dishwasher should make this a moot point, but I don't use one) and it's easy to use. The directions make sense and cover what you need to know. The time has a clear and easy-to-read display. There's not much else to say about this steamer other than that I wouldn't give mine up.

We steam most of our food and we purchased this because of the size and the reviews. The steamer is great for veges and similar softer items but takes forever on rice, etc. The life of this product is about 1 year. When the first one gave out, we purchased the same steamer again, due to the fact that we have not found another one that has the space or the speed for veges. We did have to get a separate 4 in 1 steamer/cooker due to the fact that this does not cook rice well. I would love the manufacturer to make this product more durable. At this point, I would be willing to pay more, if the product would just last longer than one year.

I bought this to augment (not replace) an older discontinued Oster/Sunbeam two tier steamer. Refreshingly, the "improvements" over the prior model were actually improvements.
This one has a keep-warm feature after timed steaming is done.
I use it to steam potatoes for "whipped" potatoes, now I only use instant flakes to thicken gravies. By steaming the potatoes in the large upper tier, and putting small bowls in the lower smaller tier, I can collect potato water.
I bought a ExcelSteel Professional Quality 6-1/2-Inch Heavy Gauge Mesh Colander With Santopreme Handles so I could steam frozen peas, and it works extremely well.
It doesn't need constant attention, so in the summer it steams away politely in the garage.
For rice I use a Zojirushi NHS-06 3-Cup Rice Cooker, or its larger brother the Zojirushi NHS-10 6-Cup Rice Cooker/Steamer & Warmer, White--too good and too easy.
Hint: when steaming asparagaus, raise them off the steamer's container floorI break bamboo chopsticks for this. Even better, roast in the oven or sauté the asparagus in a little extra virgin olive oil & butter!

I'm lazy, I admit it. Sometimes I don't get around to cleaning this a day or two after I've used it. As everyone else who rates it a one, its impossible to drain completely from the little inlet thing. Yea you can still use vodka or vinegar to clean it out when it gets all nasty, but really it would be nicer if you could just dump it upside down to empty all the water out.
