Hats off to the designers of appliances that perform multiple functions! After all, what kitchen couldn't benefit from more efficient use of limited space? The Krups FDH212 10-cup automatic rice cooker is also a slow cooker and a food steamer; select among those three modes and then, if necessary, set the time using the touch buttons on the control panel. The time counter shows remaining cooking time on a two-digit display. After cooking in any mode, the Krups rice cooker will shift to a keep-warm mode; the switch-over is noted by an orange indicator light on the control panel. In its most basic function, this rice cooker yields up to 20 cups of cooked rice. But it's also useful for all the typical slow-cooker dishes; soups, stews, chili, etc. An enclosed booklet includes recipes that range from the home-style Yankee Pot Roast to the fancier Casablanca lamb and apricot stew, as well as including simple cooking instructions for rice. This is a lovely appliance, too--modern curves in gleaming stainless steel with high-gloss black lid and accents. The lacquer-black lid has a large, curved, stay-cool handle and a click-close lock with a gray release button. On the underside of the lid, a removable steam shield helps keep the scalding steam away from the lid and directs moisture back into the food. The deep nonstick cooking bowl is removable for easy cleaning; a sturdy black plastic steaming rack rests inside the bowl to suspend food above the water. One small but very considerate feature is a condensation collector; a channel running under the edge of the closed lid conducts condensation droplets to a small catch pocket on the side. A small plastic measuring cup and black plastic rice paddle (with attachable spoon rest) come with the cooker. To preserve the nonstick coating of the cooking bowl, use wooden, plastic, or rubber utensils. Vinegar--used in the cooking of short-grain sushi rice--may corrode the nonstick surface over time. To clean the body of the rice cooker, wipe with a damp cloth and then wipe dry; the appliance is not immersible. The removable steam shield, steam basket, and nonstick cooking bowl can be washed by hand or in the dishwasher. To re-season the bowl after every few rounds in the dishwasher, wipe the inner surface of the bowl with a little cooking oil.  THE BEST addition to my kitchen! December 4, 2008
I cook a lot. I have done so for many years and have collected a small array of high-end essentials for making cooking a pleasure instead of a chore. I am not into gadgets; I do not own a bullet, or hot dog toaster or anything else my mother didn't use -- I figure why waste the space in the kitchen and clutter up my life if good tools can do the job.
Just a back ground on my purchasing habits; I have a Kitchenaid mixer, Cuisinart food processor, Cuisinart blender, Rival basic crockpot and a Krups toaster oven. I got this machine for a wedding present and didn't think much of it, we put it on the list because it looked interesting.
I opened the box, washed the parts, plugged it in and have used it several times a week since July. THIS automatic multi-cooker by Krups is FANTASIC!!!
It makes perfect rice, regardless of what type you put in. It steams fish and veggies to perfection. It is the best slow cooker I have ever used. It is near sentient in its ability to cook perfectly no matter what you put in it. Seriously.
What I have cooked in it...
RICES:
Brown Californian rice, Brown Basmani rice, White italian rice, White sushi rice, White Jasmine rice, Mixed wild rice pilaf, quinoa.
SLOW COOKER:
Curry chicken, chicken soup, the best roast I have ever had(you can CUT it, it doesn't shred!), beef stroganoff, tortilla soup, coco vin, stews, dulce de leche, baked potatoes, beef bourguignon, custards, pork loin with apricots, marinara sauce, beef bolognese, lasagne, spanish casserole, breakfast casserole, chilis, more.
STEAM:
A wide variety of veggies and several types of fish, all wonderful.
You can also cook pasta in it if your burners on the stove are occupied! There are instructions to tell you how. It comes with a small booklet of recipes to get you going or at least give you ideas. The "keep war" function keeps foods piping hot for serving without over cooking them. The rice paddle is a nice accesory to have in the handy little holder on the side, it is easily removed as well. I have even clamped it shut and carried it by the handle to a friend's house to bring chili to a party!
I also appreciate that it is an airtight seal, the lid clamps into place and releases no steam for slow cooking and self regulates rice cooking with a steam vent. It has even has a condensation collector so it doesn't drip everywhere when you open the lid. Since you lose no moisture when slow cooking, you really get great flavour and texture from meat that I had never been able to get in the Rival crockpot. Seeing as how both my husband and I work full time, this has been a wonderful help during the week to get a complete dinner on the table in minutes. On weekends, I use it to make chicken or beef stock, or to cook up a batch of rice for the week.
I am allergic to wheat, so it is great to have a quick and delicious source of perfect rice and grains.
The Krups toaster-oven I own is also a 5 star appliance; very reliable company. I would say this is the perfect wedding present -- if the couple does cook it is a great help, if the couple doesn't cook, then this will be a great way to make it easy on them to get started :)
The Krups website has replacement parts available, I plan on buying an extra interior bowl so I can pull out the entree and drop in the rice to cook -- even easier. Also, the bowl is metal so you can drop in frozen items without worry of cracking the crock.
This has my highest recommendation, it is like having a sous-chef in your kitchen!
 Disappointed November 23, 2008
I ordered this for my brother and sister-in-law for Christmas. It arrived early because I wanted it there before the holiday rush. Good thing I did. It was what they told me they wanted... but it was not what we expected. It scorched the rice in the bottom if left on too long. My sister-in-law is Chinese and they always have a pot of rice hot in their kitchen. Not with this pot! They returned and we're still looking for the right rice pot.
High Quality Cooker October 24, 2008
The Krups Rice cooker is a VERY large rice cooker that performs all of it's duties very well. The automatic sensing function is great for tossing rice in before class and coming home to perfectly cooked rice.
Overall, a great cooker for the money. Highly recommended.
Great Rice Cooker January 18, 2008
I bought this as a Christmas present for my son who lives with me and wants to cook Thai food. It cooks rice perfectly. The only suggestion I have is if you slow cook it and it's done you shouldn't leave it too long in the pot or it will turn brown.

My husband ordered this as a Christmas gift apon my request. I love it. I have used it several times to cook whole grain brown rice. I have used the crock-pot feature to cook a large roast and veggies. I have used the steam option almost daily to steam veggies for lunch or reheat left overs instead of using a microwave. Used to reheat left overs allows them to stay fresh and not get dried out or over heated in spots. I have used the rice feature to cook whole grain oatmeal for breakfast. I am still learning to cook with it, but so far no complaints. The only thing I can complain about is my fault, I will set the machine to it's function, then forget to push the start button because my old machine didnt have a start button. Maybe a warning beep to let you know you still need to push the start button to actually turn the thing on would be a good feature for us dummies with three kids, LOL. I do agree with some of the other reviews that the handle and button feels a little on the cheap side and I do wish it were a bit stouter, therefore I give the 4 stars. But the actual function in all modes works great and it is super easy to clean up.
